The curse of Hollywood: 9 shocking coincidences that haunt the industry

Hollywood may seem like glitz, glam and an endless good time on the surface, but there are rumoured to be a whole heap of curses haunting the industry.
From a group of stars dying at the young age of 27 , to endless bad luck for a stream of Playboy models, there's been some seriously shocking coincidences on set and in the wider celebrity world.
And, while it may all be coincidence, there are rumours some of the biggest films in the industry were cursed from the start.
Here are nine of the most shocking instances:

The '27 Club'

Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix
27 Club

The so-called ‘27 Club’ of musicians who burnt brightly but died too soon, was coined after the deaths in the ‘60s and ’70s of some of the giants of the music scene.
The first was Brian Jones, The Rolling Stones guitarist found dead in his pool in 1969.
That was followed by electric guitar hero Jimi Hendrix who choked on his own vomit after a drink and drugs binge in London in 1970.
A month later tragic singer Janis Joplin died of a probable heroin overdose, and less than a year later Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors, was found dead in a bathtub in Paris from heart failure.
Even after the hedonistic days of the late ‘60s, though, the 27 Club continued to grow, as a surprising number of top musicians died at that age.
In 1994 Kurt Cobain, the depressed lead singer of Nirvana, shot himself dead.
According to the book  Heavier Than Heaven, when Cobain died, his sister claimed as a child he would talk about how he wanted to join the 27 Club.
And tragic singer Amy Winehouse died in 2011 from a drug overdose, adding her name to the ever-growing list.
Other groups including Canned Heat, The Drifters, Uriah Heep, The Grateful Dead and Big Star have all lost members aged 27.

The curse of the The Dark Knight

Tragic Heath Ledger

Of course, a tragedy the world will remember was actor Heath Ledger's death in 2008 at just 28-years-old, shortly before his film The Dark Knight was released.
But it wasn't the only terrible news for the film crew.
A stuntman, Conway Wickliffe, was killed during filming when the car reportedly crashed into a tree.
The father-of-two suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
And the main actor himself, Christian Bale, was arrested just before the premiere of the film in 2008, for alleged assault.

The Terminator curse

Surely not?

Another film rumoured to have had a worrying curse was the Terminator series (so, actually more than just the one film this time).
It began when Nick Stahl was admitted to hospital in June last year and placed on an involuntary '5150 psychiatric hold'.
He later admitted "it was helpful" and was released shortly after.
Unrelated but unfortunate all the same, actor Edward Furlong has struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for years, and it reportedly started after he filmed Terminator 2.
He first entered rehab in 2000, and has been admitted several times since, most recently last year.
And who could forget renowned actor Christian Bale's foul-mouthed rant on the set of Terminator Salvation?
After hapless crew member Shane Hurlbut accidentally ruined a take, the actor let rip with an extraordinary expletive-laden tirade which tarnished his star status.
In just three minutes, he unleashed the F word 39 times in a rant that put Gordon Ramsay to shame.
"I want you off the f****** set, you p****," Bale screamed at the movie's photography director.
He later apologised, saying: "I was out of order beyond belief."

A stream of bad luck for Playboy

Tragic

From established A-listers to wannabes, there's been a long line of Playboy Playmates whose lives have hit the skids or even come to an untimely end after appearing in the magazine.
Reality star Danielle Lloyd was stripped of her Miss Great Britain title after revealing she had a relationship with footballer Teddy Sheringham, who had been one of the judges of the competition.
And it went from bad to worse for the star after she was accused of being racist to 2007 Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty.
But far worse was a string of  Playboy models' deaths.
Stunner Jayne Mansfield was killed in a car crash while being driven through the night between engagements in 1967.
Tragic Dorothy Stratten was killed by her husband in 1980, before he turned the gun on himself, and Claudia Jennings died in a car crash in 1979m, after modelling for Playboy.
Charlie's Angels star Farrah Fawcett also graced the magazine cover in 1995, but later became just as well known for her stormy personal life thanks to her on-off relationship with actor Ryan O'Neal and rumours of drug abuse.

The Poltergeist Plague

Eerie

While filming a horror film surely guarantees a few flickering lights and an eerie atmosphere, according to reports the cast and crew noted some worrying extra flickers while filming The Poltergeist Plague.
But while that hardly warrants the curse title, a tragic death followed shortly after.
Actress Dominique Dunne, who played the oldest daughter in the film, was murdered by her ex boyfriend at just 22.
But even more shocking, three more of the main characters died unexpectedly, including Will Sampson, Julian Beck and Heather O'Rourke - who died of septic shock at just 12-years-old.

The Exorcist spreads fear

Terrifying

Perhaps one of the most well known curse rumours surrounded the Exorcist film.
Many have referenced strange occurrences on set, and the main one was when the interior sets of the MacNeil residence, except for Regan's bedroom, were destroyed by a studio fire and had to be rebuilt.
But most tragic of all was the death of Jack MacGowran shortly after finishing filming. He is thought to have died from the London flu epidemic at the time in 1973.

Superman curse

'Cursed' heroes

Another well known and seriously spooky coincidence happened in the world of Superman.
A shocking four of the actors tragically died unexpectedly after being involved in the films, starting with George Reeves who died of a gunshot wound aged 45, and Christopher Reeve, who was paralyzed in a 1995 horseback riding accident, and died nine years later aged 52.
Bud Collyer (who voiced the uperman cartoon in 1941), died of a circulatory problem at the age of 61.
And Lee Quigley, who played Superman as a baby in 1978, died at just 14-years-old due to solvent abuse.

James Dean's Porsche 550 Spyder, nicknamed Little B*****d

Death car?

Actor James Dean's bought his Porsche 550 Spyder - named Little B*****d - while filming Rebel Without a Cause, and it was reportedly named that due to how terrifying it looked.
The actor was killed when the car crashed in 1955, and since then many more have been killed after coming into contact with parts of the car.
Although there is no evidence to suggest it has anything to do with touching the car, Troy McHenery and William Exchrid were both killed in car crashes after buying parts of the broken car.
It immediately sparked rumours there was a curse on the vehicle.

The Omen Curse

Haunting

Now while all of these send slight shivers down our spine, none are quite as shocking as The Omen.
While filming of the satanic film, scriptwriter David Seltzer and Gregory Peck’s two planes (yes, they flew SEPARATELY), were both hit by lighting.
As if that wasn't enough, executive producer Mace Neufelds' plane from Rome was almost struck too.
A special effects consultant reportedly later crashed his car in Holland and died on Friday 13, and Gregory Peck’s son died after reportedly shooting himself.
Gregory himself cancelled a seat on a plane to Israel which later crashed, killing everyone onboard.
